Back in the Saddle Again

After a year of being away I made my way back into the social scene with a shopping spree.  Not really a spree… more like I dipped my toe into the current fashion pool.  I wanted to make an outfit that said that I am still a beautiful woman with style and a head for what’s new.  I felt great mingling in this outfit, and turned quite a few heads.  It was a great night and an awesome first time back into the swing of things.

Note: Most of these links are to their online stores.  This is the way I shop most of the time.  If they don’t have an online store, I will provide the in-world location.

XStreet is for Lovers

I pride myself on being progressive when it comes to customs, taste, and technology, but there are times when I myself drag my feet.  I certainly am not the first person to try something new (because I know that it is often the case that first time technology comes with a long list of grievances), but I never want to be the last, or even one of the last, to try something.

This time I am referring to the online marketplace for Second Life, XStreet.  Three years into the game and I flat out refused to use the thing.  I have always loved using the search algorithm inworld and going from store to store in order to get that vibe that comes with shopping.  However, even I change my mind about most things and XStreet is no different.

My turning point was when I was planning my wedding.  I was getting so frustrated going from one wedding store to another and not seeing what I wanted.  How do you search for burgundy flower arrangements and sculpted prim bouquets?  I must admit that a lot of things I used for the wedding was either found or purchased on XStreet.  It was just so… convenient.

If ever I need something obscure or specific, the search usually does a good job sifting through the tens of thousands of items sold on XStreet.  I use it to find costumes and scripts.  I even found my house on XStreet and even though I still like to buy things in SL (I tend to choose XStreet items that are also sold inworld and then go there) I am increasingly finding myself relying on XStreet.  Now I will visit almost everyday even when I am not looking for anything particular; just like I used to do inworld.  There are no rez times, no lag, and the deals are amazing.  I have bought beautifully crafted shoes for under 50L and furnished skyboxes for under 100L.  I truly never know what wonderful thing will be sold next and I can spend days browsing.

And the convenience just got better now that all linden transfers do not have to be done at a kiosk in Second Life but in your XStreet account online.  So today’s post features some of the things that I have bought online.

The motif today is clubbing.  I enjoy the music scene and put on something that’s fashionable, sexy, and moves well.  The Xstreet items that I bought on a whim because they were so inexpensive were the red boots and the black dress.  I also bought Truth’s Brit hair online because of the almost guaranteed crowd that always shops inworld.

These are a few of my favorite things…

Right off the bat, I want to tell you that nothing funky or new was found for this post.  I wanted to do an article that was very close and personal to me.  I wanted to say something about myself that I wouldn’t otherwise say and thus show you all a side of Maev Ceawlin that few get to know.  And that is I am a huge formal junkie.  The first dress I bought in Second Life was a ball gown, the first hair I bought a romantic up do, and one the first places I searched for upon rezzing (which will be three years ago Saturday) was a ballroom.  I love to dance and it is one of the ways I meet people (it was how I met my fiancé).

So I wanted to share with you some of my favorite looks and gowns.  I am always looking for the next best thing, and my aesthetic has always been (and will always be) simple, graceful, romantic, and natural.  The same skins I wear for casual wear are invariably the same skins I use when in formal attire.  To dress them up, I change lashes to something more full and dramatic (hint, hint).  Shoes aren’t in this post, because they are usually hidden by the long gowns, but when dancing, the skirt often reveals the footwear so here is some advice:  get open-toed heels in at least two colors, black and white; while pumps are okay, they aren’t dressy enough.  Keep it simple; a ball gown is supposed to be about accentuating the waist, bosom, and visage, not your feet so always match as close as you can to your gown and please, no bling.

I guess it’s the little girl still within me that loved to play dress up, put on mama’s jewels, put some Vivaldi on, and dance around the living room with my biggest teddy bear, but I can never resist the urge to slip into something silky and exquisite, go to the more popular ballrooms and dance the night away.  I recommend the indulgence, even if you don’t like to dance; what better way is there to see what everyone else is wearing! XD

SySy’s is a top priority for me when it comes to gowns.  I subscribe to the updates and own at least a half-dozen of SySy Chapman’s gowns.  They are classy and well made.  I am a woman who, above all else, prizes versatility and economy, so Redgrave‘s pale Jennifer skin in smoky is a staple of mine.  The dramatic eye and pale lips go with everything in my wardrobe, and the ample cleavage provides the sex appeal where the dress demands it.  Aden‘s Suri hair goes perfectly with its flirty and romantic curves.

With Spanish flair, this gorgeous gown is from Son!a.  I saw this on another dancer at a ballroom I frequent and had to have it  The lace is beautifully done (with options that allow it to be opaque or see-through for those more brazen), the color rich and the applique detail at the bottom very graphic and modern.  League‘s Misty skin is just as detailed as Redgrave’s, but you get different cleavage options.  I enjoy how bright this skin is and its refinement.  The style of my hair has seen a trend recently, and that is that it usually has something to do with Truth Hawk’s ever-growing collection of delicately coiffed dos.  Here I am wearing Rosa, an àpropos title for an up do that comes with three different colored roses that you can interchange to match your outfit.  This picture doesn’t do them justice, they. are. gorgeous.  The attention to detail is absolutely, completely, and masterfully crafted.  I want a whole dress just out of the roses, heeheehee.

I told you I keep it simple, lol.  This SySy Chapman gown is as basic as they come; a rich velvety brown that drapes off one shoulder.  But how many times have I gone to the dance halls and all I saw was red, pink, and boobs?  Brown might be earthy, it might be neutral, but it stands out in a sea of color.  I always pair this dress up with Maitreya hair, because both are realistically made and go well.  I’m using the dramatic lip option that Curio skins come with, which is a blessing, because I would never buy them on my own.

Another important dressmaker that I have visited for years is Nicky Ree.  This woman has always put out a stunning gown and she’s been one the best in the business forever and a day (SL time).  This gown I’ve had for almost two years (I just realized that number and gasped; I had no idea I was that old lol) and I love the rich brown, but also the fun stripes in the top that make this unique.  Atomic‘s winter skins have been good to me this season; I love the shading on the cheek and the brows are the perfect shape for my face.  Fri.day‘s Quinn makes an appearance in this blog, being the more styled long length in my inventory.  The color and delicateness goes wonderfully with the skin and gown.

Kungler’s is relatively new on my list, and this is the only dress I’ve bought from there so far, but I am very impressed by their elegance.  This is actually a more avant-garde piece; with these almost wreath-like wrappings going down the back and up around the front of the dress, but I think the colors are amazing.  The wine tulle is brought out even more by the taupes and blue-greens of the straps.  To me this dress is very earthy and so I usually wear leaf earrings and a more natural hair style (in this case Maitreya’s Dylan in almond)

This gown is new to me and it’s from Skin Flicks, purveyors of fine formal and semi-formal wear.  I love the draping and light lavender color of this dress.  I feel pretty and ethereal when wearing it.  Going with that idea, I used a loosely gathered hairstyle from Fri.day, Jasmine2.  Tendrils frame and cover my face just as romantically as the dress drapes my body.

If you noticed, I started out dark, with the deep tones of passion and sensuality.  We end here with lighter shades of romance, bringing elegance and discernment to the forefront.  This dress is one of the few in my closet that comes from the same designer that I get my haute couture.  I must say that Lelutka has crafted a piece of the highest quality in this gown.  It’s just drooling with sophistication and realism from the sash around the waist to the structured bodice.  If I want to make a statement to all those I come across in the dance halls, I wear this beauty.  I usually wear Lamb!‘s bumped ponytail because for me it equals the simple splendor of the gown.

And there you have it!  My secret pastime is exposed!  Though I can’t say I didn’t enjoy immensely this article.  My jewelry choices here were from Luc (formerly Earthtones when I bought them) and I didn’t vary from this because I usually don’t vary in real SL.  I like jewelry to be complementary, not the focus, so I make them small accents in my ensemble (another good hint).

Auld Lang Syne

Now is the time to don your newest party dress and celebrate the end of the year like it was the last!  Here’s a toast to a new year and a decade of fashion and I can’t wait to see what Second Life brings in the future.

This month I was lucky enough to sample the new releases from Fab.Pony and I must say that I am happy to see Tatianna Faulkes is still ahead of the curve.  Her greatest addition this season?  Unitards, which should be the first fashion trend for the new year.  Leggings have come back in the last few years and now that same lycra magic can spread all the way up the torso.  Accessorize a unitard and you have created a perfect outfit for a party or event where trendiness is imperative.

Headline: New York Divorcee Spends Thousands at Husband’s Expense

This sweater reminds me of all the extremely stylish matrons of world renown who are the woman behind the man.  Jackie Onassis, Brooke Astor, etc.  They were larger than life women with class and pride.  I found this sweater by Chantkare and for the first time in my second life, I want to put on white hair, talk about botox, and dress like my life depended upon it.

Manhattan Power Wife

My story for this character is a first wife; there for her man when he was just a lowly stock trader.  He is now a titan of industry, but resentful of all that she has done for him.  To assert his fledgling identity, he has been sleeping with a young model and like that it is out with the older, and in with the teenybopper.

But hell have no fury like a woman scorned.  She has hired the best divorce attorneys and hawked all her priceless jewelry to pay for them.  She still dresses like a queen, but her throne is in danger.  To show her husband, and the world, that a wife isn’t so easily dismissed, she has gallivanted and strutted her way into half his fortune and his company.  They might not be man and wife, but he’ll be pleasing her until his dying day.  Women like this always have the last laugh.  It’s catty and empowering.  I love it.

Steampunk or Bust

I think it is time to further describe some of my life.  Before I got involved in fashion photography, way back in my infancy, I was a role player.  I have participated in role playing games (RPG) since my teens and when I first got onto Second Life, I naturally applied myself to a medieval realm.  Sufficed to say, it didn’t work out because I just could not stop going OOC (“out of character” for the RPG illiterate) which made me very anachronistic.

But what did come out of the experience was a long lasting friendship with one of my fellow gamers.  At the time he had just become manager of a themed sim called Steelhead.  Him and his wife took hold of the construction and maintenance of the town and made it one of THE most elaborate and highly successful themed sims.  Now Steelhead can proudly claim five sims (with at least one on the way) and I can claim it as my home.

Steelhead’s theme is Steampunk.  If you haven’t dealt with alternate realities, the fantasy is simply this:  it is a culture that surrounds itself around Victorian era science fiction and fantasy.  Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, and His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman are to name a few of the influences that Steampunk uses to create a dynamic and expanding environment.  It might be staged in the past, but it is not confined to it and that makes steampunk fashion so much like modern fashion.  Designers are always finding something new to craft, and some new gadget to attach.

Dark Angel

Dark Angel

Steelhead doesn’t tell its citizens what decade to dress in, so in a way I feel less leary about my fashion choices.  I don’t have to worry if something is last season or last decade, because with Steampunk, anything Victorian works.  I can go from Antebellum to turn of the century at a whim and always be in the mode.

But I am into modern fashion, so why not merge the two ideas and come up with something avante garde?

Don’t Be Givin’ Me No Evils

So though I don’t consider myself a hipster (the lifestyle is too apathetic and negligent for my taste), I have to admit that I like the way they dress.  Hipsters claim they loathe mainstream, but they are more often than not slaves to trends whether it be in alternative music or organic food.  I try not to get sucked into their ways, but I hang at their clubs a lot and the fashions always get me.  Some can be full out glammed, but others are comfortable in their Clash duds.

So my alternative looks always tend to take on a Hipster quality.

Getting Ready for a Hot Night

Getting Ready for a Hot Night

Hipsters adore anything non-American and even though I drink Bud and listen to John Mayer, I also enjoy foreign affairs.  The title of this post comes from a British show called “Little Britain.”  If you haven’t seen it than rent it; I tell you it is the best sketch comedy I’ve ever seen.

So my typical weekend evening consists of me standing in front of my closet for like fifteen minutes, just staring abstractly at everything I own, picturing separates that would go well together.  I try not to repeat the same outfits twice within a month or so (thus my gigantic wardrobe) and then I move a few things around; holding up a certain bottom to my pile of folded tops to see which colors complement.

Usually I’ve bought something new or there is a certain piece or accessory I want to coordinate into an ensemble.  This evening I wanted to where this hair from Dernier Cri.  Isn’t Dernier Cri awesome?  You can buy a three pack with any color you want.  I spent like 20 minutes figuring out which shade went best with my skins and now I want to show it off with something hip.

Hair Glory

Showing love to…

Milk Motion skins.  I wanted my makeup to be very naturale.  Alice accents the hair well.

Dernier Cri hairs!  Always great, I picked up three other styles along with this one and I didn’t pick the same shade twice!  Each design is unique and has its own attitude so it’s so awesome you can pick and choose from over 70 shades.

&Bean‘s Rain which is all sorts of hip.  It mixes so many elements into a stylish and fun look.  I slipped this one on along with Maitreya‘s black leggings.

Armidi‘s Dahlia pumps!  A must, especially in cerise (pink)!  I find that a basic design shoes, like simple pumps, in bright colors always takes an outfit to the next level when it comes to style.  You’ll never go wrong with stand-out footwear.

I went all out with my jewelry.  Luc zebra bangle on my left, Shiny Things code armlet on my right, and two necklaces dangling and jangling to the music.  One is Royal Blue‘s stone pendant in gold multi-colored, the other is VintageWear‘s Mixed Tape.  You will be seeing me wearing these a lot this summer!

Now I must rush… I’ve spent so much time getting dressed that I’m going to be late to the clubs!

Patchouli On My Mind

I wanted to make an outfit of some new things I’ve bought lately, namely the blouse from Zaara, the jacket from Pink Outfitters and the wide leg jeans from FTV.

A Day on the Town

A Day on the Town

After my vacation in the Caribbean, I had a wicked tan and I love how white shirts just let your sun kissed skin pop.  I am also glad that I got some wide leg jeans… which is a staple of my RL wardrobe, but now that many designers are incorporating the wide leg into their collections, I finally have some options for SL.

I wore this as I was catching up with all the new releases that came out while I was away.  It was more put together and civilized then my tropical wardrobe, but it kept some influences of the bohemian; namely the khaki jacket, the leather peeps and my SLink jewelry.

Something new:

Skin is MAI‘s Mia skin in midday.

Hair is Maitreya‘s Piper II in coffee.  I obviously had to die my hair this rich brown after the tropical sun bleached it out 😉

Blouse by Zaara.  The Isis blouse is going to become my new favorite, I just know it.  I have always loved this collar and I bought the neutral pack (wearing the white version)

Pink Outfitter‘s Rosalie blazer in wood forest green protects me from the chilly April air.  I’m so tired of the cold and it would be really nice to get out of the 50s (Fahrenheit)!

Jeans are from Frozen Turquoise Valentine (FTV).  Not a bad texturing job and I like the four sculptie attachments (two for each leg) which gives it a genuine appeal.

And something not so new…

Accessories included Gisaci’s Fi Umo sunglasses, SLink’s wood and amber jewellry, and ICoN’s biege enamel bag.

Shoes are Maitreya’s Frenzy in Bordeaux

Wishes Won’t (Acid) Wash Dishes

People will be seeing my acid wash, skinny jeans a lot this season.  The 80s are coming back with avengence; day glo, hightops, and now the acid wash.  I’m all for these returns so long as people chose to wear a modernized version, otherwise they risk looking dated, not edgy.

Acid Casual

Acid Casual

I haven’t yet broadened my vision and accepted any other acid wash color that isn’t gray.  The pair I got from Fab Pony came with a green pair which I haven’t touched.  Like I said, I don’t want to date myself, so instead of big, blonde hair (which was huge in the 80s), I kept a natural, warm brown; I believe this and my gray combo shirt and sweater give my look an up to date and trendy appearance.

Always hot in…

Maitreya‘s Apple hair in chocolate…

Redgrave‘s pale Leona in gold (it is spring after all, and though this is the pale version of Leona, the warmer makeup gives it a summery, bronzed complexion)…

MichaMi‘s cardie (part of the Carmela outfit, which goes just as wonderfully as separates as it does as a finished business ensemble)…

Armidi‘s sheer-ribbed tank in dark grey…

Tesla‘s fur vixen pumps (a bit of flair for this otherwise monotone assemblage)…

… and accessories from Shiny Things’ and ::B@R::

All Business

I love the options available for women when it comes to business wear.  You can actually be quite couture and that opens up endless possibilities for self expression.  But of course the functional side of my brain screams every time I want to put on heels for an eight hour day;  man it hurts to look so good 😉

Working Girl

Working Girl

The inspiration for this scene is the movie Working Girl with Melanie Griffiths, Harrison Ford, and Sigourney Weaver.  It was the heyday of 80’s fashion with the huge shoulder pads, teased-to-death hair, and the sexist jokes.  The movie is a fairy tale story of making it in the business world (and who doesn’t enjoy that) and so I decided to match Melanie Griffiths’ looks with a modern update of Sigourney Weaver’s bitchiness and wardrobe.  This woman is all business, femininity, and tenacity without the tact.

What the bitch is wearing:

To duplicate Melanie’s hair, I chose a short, blond classic from ETD; Naomi in strawberry

The skin is Redgrave‘s Jennifer in smoky.  This is the only makeup I have for Jennifer, but I think it’s all you need for flawless drama without all the coloring that can sometimes clash with an outfit.  Definitely love versatility in a skin.

The blouse is sexy and classy and part of Mimikri‘s Modesty (what a contradiction in terms :P)

I paired it with Maitreya’s new High Skirt, shown here in Blossom.  Putting these two items together, to me, broadcasts to everyone in the office that “yea, I got the goods, but they aren’t for sale.”

I also played with the idea of wearing nylons; a must in most business situations.  But I decided that if I’m showing cleavage that it doesn’t make sense to not show off the calves.  If I had worn a high-collared shirt instead, I would have probably opted for tights.

To finish of this official look, I put on Maitreya’s Mishima Dawn in shiny/suede.

Urbanite Side

I used to have JNCO jeans that were as big as a circus tent and I used to love wearing them with a tight top and that was how I rolled hip-hop style.  I have this inner struggle against nature and concrete; I love lush landscapes and muted tones as well as the city and I love the stark grey mixed with the bright graffiti colors.

I don’t have much problem with graffiti.  As long as it’s done well, I consider it art and I like how it can transform a building which can sometimes look cold and inhuman.  Where I live, it used to be very industrial but the businesses have gone and what left is rusting depots and warehouses.  When something is completely covered in graffiti, I feel like it’s been transformed into something outstanding and beautiful.

Blue Haze

Blue Haze

Again I stress that I like to do masculinity like a woman.  These JP Design pants are just like the JNCOs I used to have as a teenager with all the great pocket space I remember, which means you need a fabulous belt to hold it all up.  Luckily the pants are equipped with such and comes with its own color changing iPod.  The feminine is the wavy locks and skin tight hoodie put out by Maitreya.

Full Details:

Skin is Alice from Milk Motion

Coffee hair is add-on to Maitreya‘s Jam green hoodie

Zimbabwe necklace in “kiss” from Armidi Limited

JP baggy pants in black

The shoes I have on, though are out of shot, is the SOREAL sneakers in a matching green

I also have on Cake‘s bedroom lashes and Redgrave‘s Leona sage green eyes
